If you find yourself sniffing and sneezing throughout the spring months, it may be time for a thorough house cleaning.
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, approximately 40 million people in the U.S. suffer from indoor/outdoor allergies. While it is best to consult with a physician to learn how to handle your specific health questions, it is important to clean the places in your home where dust and dirt originate, as cleaning these sources can lessen allergens that trigger symptoms.
Be sure to include the following in your complete cleaning this spring:
- Air duct cleaning. We recommend cleaning your air duct system every 3 to 4 years to reduce airborne allergens and improve air quality. If you live near an unpaved road, it is beneficial to have your ducts cleaned every two-and-a-half to three years to reduce dust. Construction and remodeling can also create dirt and debris, so make air duct cleaning your final step in a construction project.
- Clean soft surfaces. Soft surfaces and fabrics can be reservoirs of large amounts of airborne contaminants, pet dander and dust. Fabrics should be regularly cleaned using a vacuum with high efficiency filters and should be professionally cleaned long before they appear soiled to avoid set-in stains. Regular professional carpet cleaning should be done every 12 to 18 months, while professional upholstery cleaning should be completed every 18 to 24 months.
- Remove pet hair from fabrics and upholstery. A pet rake (a brush with crimped nylon bristles) works well for removing built up pet fur from couches and upholstery. Velour brushes and tape rollers are good for hard-to-reach places on the floor or cushions where hair collects.
- Check for water leaks throughout your home. Even minor drips from pipes or air conditioners may result in long-term damage and can produce mold when not properly dried.
