Protecting Flooring in High Traffic Areas

If your home or business sees a lot of visitors, you may notice that there are areas that show more dirt and wear than the rest of the flooring. These high traffic areas need a little extra attention to keep them from wearing out long before the rest of the flooring. Carpet can look dirty and tramped down while hardwood or tile flooring can look dingy and scuffed so no matter what type of flooring you have, there are tips to help keep it looking clean and professional.

1. Clean those high traffic areas daily. Vacuum or mop, depending on the flooring type, each day to keep the carpet fibers pulled up, dirt removed and hard surfaces sanitized. Be sure when choosing the flooring to put in those areas, you are choosing a type of carpet, tile or hardwood that will be able to stand up to higher wear. It will look better in the long run than a fancier flooring that is more likely to show dirt and scuff marks.

2. Use rugs and mats in high traffic areas and entryways. They catch dirt, protect the original flooring from scuff marks and can help clean shoes at entryways to prevent customers and staff from tracking it further. While they are highly recommended, be sure mats and rugs can be securely fastened to the floor to avoid trip hazards. These should be thoroughly cleaned monthly and replaced regularly as needed.

3. Deep clean the flooring of the entire structure at least once a year. For businesses that have really high traffic, more often will probably be needed to keep that clean and professional look on your floors and upholstery.
